An excuse.
I’m leaving town for a week and I really see no reason to have my computer system running while I’m gone. I just learned that 10% of the nation’s power is used to run electronic devices and chargers that are not actually in use. I figured I’d do my part to be green by shutting down all of my electronics when I’m not around to use them.
So the WebCam is offline until May 28.
And in case you’re wondering, I will be blogging while I’m away. I’ve been so incredibly busy this weekend that I haven’t gotten time to write much more than this. I expect to write about my helicopter flying gig in Yarnell yesterday, a recent attempt to scam me, and today’s adventure: a 350-mile helicopter flight from Wickenburg, AZ to Torrance, CA, including a landing atop LAX’s west helipad.
Wish me luck.

Like you, I also recently read about the enormous use of electricity for unused items. What I found more disturbing was that the “OFF” position of very many devices is not off at all, but rather a stand-by mode which still consumes quite a bit of the potential draw of the device. I’m a stickler for turning things off, but that taught me that, short of pulling the plug at the wall, it is largely a waste of time.

A few months ago there was quite a bit of discussion about the amount of power used when things are still plugged in at the wall. I had all sorts of cellphone chargers and the like that I’d leave plugged in and switched on even though I wasn’t actively using them at the time.
Now I try to switch off and disconnect devices I’m not actually using.
I don’t extend that to the TV and things with clocks in where it would be a real pain to pull the plug, but if I can save a few cents by such an easy action (and a few grams or kilos of CO2), then why not?

Have enjoyed your escapades in flying and ‘landlording’ as well as comments about Wickenburg. We are looking at Wickenburg as a possible destination for the Winter season. Sometimes being at the ‘edge of nowhere’ isn’t too bad. Look forward to more comments about Wickenburg.
Be safe flying. It’s a long way from the ‘edge of nowhere’ to LAX.
